The Internet

What is the Internet?:

Simply put, it is a vast global network of computer networks. It is also a community of users (you and I) who use that network, and it is a collection of various resources containing information which is accessible to all those users.

It can be accessed by all computers - From Apple to IBM; From Mini to Mainframe. How? By use of the same common computer language for exchange of information, that being TCP/IP.

Internet History:

During the late 1950's the US Military funded research into distributed computing. Principally, this work was undertaken within the US Government and in select Universities. There have been suggestions that its purpose was to make "defence computer networking" resilient to nuclear attack, however, there is no evidence to support this theory.

Once this network had been established, other small computer networks were created with the main distribution being through Universities, firstly in the USA, then worldwide. The sharing of information between these educational bodies was useful, however, in its early days there was no mass appeal.

Then in the late 1980's, an Englishman by the name of Tim Berners Lee developed HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), and in doing so invented the World Wide Web (WWW), which was to become the super application of the Internet. Very soon after came the public releases of software called web browsers that enable users (You and I again) to be able to view this HTML code. Browsers such as Mosaic, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera & Internet Explorer.
